Tips for Living Better

Do I need Physical Therapy?

Typically, people seek physical therapy to help with lingering pain from an injury/surgery or to relieve general aches and pains. Some people use physical therapy to enhance their overall performance or to improve their endurance and ability. Follow these steps to see if physical therapy can help your overall health.

Relieve Pain Using Physical Therapy

1.    Step 1

Research local physical therapy clinics; make sure they are a reputable clinic that provides the services you can benefit from.

2.    Step 2

Make an appointment to see a physical therapist if you experience pain or limited mobility. Rather than treat your pain symptomatically with medication, you may need to work out your issues with a supervised course of treatment.3.

  Step 3

Learn methods of physical therapy that you can do in your own home. Supplementing sessions in the therapist's office will allow faster recovery and decreased pain. At-home treatment should only be done if your type of injury can withstand accelerated treatment.

4.    Step 4

Develop a routine of stretching to reduce pain. Patients who don't prepare their bodies with appropriate stretching may experience increased pain and injury.

5.    Step 5

Know that treatments like ultrasound, massage and traction are procedures you may need to use as a part of your total physical therapy program to alleviate pain.

Benefit From the Effects of Physical Therapy

1.    Step 1

Improve your athletic performance by working on key components of endurance using physical therapy. Training with a therapist on a treadmill, for example, may be one way to increase athletic stamina.

2.    Step 2

Prepare to have an increased sense of well-being after using physical therapy. Patients suffering from depression as a result of injury or inhibited mobility often find their therapy helps gain a positive perspective on the situation.

3.    Step 3

Approach physical therapy as a way to strengthen and condition the body for a lifetime. Precautionary methods like ergonomics and proper lifting techniques can be educational and important to limit future injury.

I've had a sore back most of my life!

I’ve had a sore back most of my life. We hear this all too often and sometimes wonder (being a physical therapist) why don’t you come and see a physical therapist?  The problem with this situation is a large number of individuals in society today are so used to “living with the pain.”  It’s getting to the point where it’s inconvenient to seek out a clinic they may be able to remedy the problem.  Rightfully so, before I became a physical therapist and learned about core strength and dynamic stability I was also “just living with the pain.”   I have been treating patients for several years now, over the years I have had a firsthand experience of the power of physical therapy. It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete or if you prefer low impact enjoyment, YOU DO NOT NEED TO LIVE IN PAIN!  I am inviting anyone who is reading this who has been suffering from back pain for many years to give physical therapy a try.  Family Physical Therapy and Wellness Center is a results based clinic that specializes in helping people live a healthy pain-free life.
