Vertebral Joint Restrictions
Degenerative Disc Disease
Herniated Discs
Cervical Radiculopathy (“pinched nerve”)
Whiplash Injuries
Neck Pain Facts:
The neck has a significant amount of motion and supports the weight of the head, however, because it is less protected than the rest of the spine, the neck can be vulnerable to injury and disorders that produce pain and restrict motion.
Most causes of neck pain aren’t serious, often improving your posture and alignment in seated or standing positions can help to alleviate symptoms.
What does the Nurture Your Neck program consist of?
Our neck program is an 8 week program tailored to each individuals needs. Treatments will typically take place 2-3 times per week with gradual reduction of frequency until the patient is pain-free and independent in management of their symptoms. Program duration may be longer or shorter dependent on the individual’s initial presentation and abilities.
Evaluation of the individual’s symptoms is completed including movement analysis to identify postural abnormalities and abnormal movement patterns.
Treatment plan is identified with the individual’s personal goals in mind for management of symptoms including manual therapy (joint and soft tissue mobilizations), modalities (heat/ice, interferential current, ultrasound, cervical traction), and exercise.
Patients will be instructed in an individualized exercise program consisting of stretching, cervical stabilization, and postural exercises, all tailored specifically to each person’s impairments and needs.
Exercise program will be progressed to included functional activities with focus on pain-free movement.
Ultimately, the patient becomes able to perform a home exercise program for long-term maintenance of symptom reduction to prevent recurrence.
Goals:
Each person’s symptoms will be managed with a variety of therapeutic techniques including soft tissue and joint mobilizations, range of motion, strengthening, and modalities to relieve pain and restore function.
Participants will learn strategies for pain management as well as tools for preventing onset of neck pain
Abnormal head and neck postures and compensations will be identified and retrained for more optimal pain-free movement
Each participant will become independent in a home exercise program for elimination of symptoms and long-term maintenance to prevent recurrence of symptoms

Self-help Tips:
Adjust your work station or home computer set-up so that you can look directly forward at your computer screen (not up or down), your forearms are supported on the desk or chair arm rests as you type or use your mouse, and your feet rest flat on the floor beneath you.
Avoid holding the phone between your ear and your shoulder, especially if your work or daily activities require you to make many calls a day.
Avoid sleeping on your stomach, the extreme amount of rotation required to position your head while on your stomach puts excessive stress on the joints and muscles in your neck.
Take regular stretching breaks: tilt your head side to side bringing your ear toward your shoulder, look side to side over each shoulder, and tuck your chin while looking straight ahead to keep the muscles that support your neck relaxed throughout the day.
